Holocrons are data repository devices made of crystal lattices. Most were lost or destroyed during the Jedi Purge; only a very few remain, and almost nobody alive knows how to make one. An information-rich holocron is one of the greatest treasures around, and can be secured only after great effort.
At some points in history, small holocrons have been used as journals or keepsakes. These insignificant holocrons can be found from time to time.
