General Description[]
The Class C Frigate is an earlier escort frigate design from KDY dating to the late Clone Wars, and the predecessor of the Nebulon B frigate. In those times, Separatist vessels and privateers were making themselves a hassle by harassing loyalist shipping, often tying down large republic warships to escort duty. To free those vessels up, KDY designed the Class C frigate to compete with Rendili's solution to the same problem, the Neutron Star Bulk Cruiser. Like the bulk cruiser, the Class C has unusually large cargo bays which are scattered throughout the stern of the craft. Unlike that ship, it is also able to hold onto two large external cargo containers like those used on the BFF-1 Bulk freighter on its front dorsal and ventral surfaces. Unfortunately, the containers severely limited the firing arcs of the ship's weaponry, and consequently were little used. For its size and age, the Class C is a remarkably fast ship because of its oversized engines and thin hull plating. It also sported intensive communication and sensor systems which would be the predecessors of those used on the later Nebulon Frigate. While KDY rushed the ship into production during the last stages of the Clone Wars, few were actually sold to the Republic, which disliked the ship's relative fragility and lack of anti-starfighter weapons. As a result, the bulk of the Class C Frigates were sold to planetary defense forces and larger corporations, often serving alongside their original competitors, the rendili-built bulk cruisers. Over the years, many have also fallen into criminal or personal hands as well, and even some aid organizations. The most famous Class C frigate is the Sudden Restoration, which has been modified into a hospital ship by the Carosites.
