The Clutch, sometimes referred to as the Tri-Fighter, is an "Ugly" starfighter used primarily the gang of pirates known as the Invids.
The Clutch consists of a TIE Fighter ball cockpit and ion engines and three triangular fins set 120° apart with one fin above the cockpit and two below. Windows are cut into the side of the ball cockpit to give the pilot a better field of vision. Clutches are similar in speed to X-wing fighters but more maneuverable.
Unlike Imperial TIE-series starfighters, the Clutch has basic shields, granting it better survivability. Weaponry consists of two laser cannons mounted below the cockpit, similar to the TIE Fighter. The Clutch also has an ion cannon mounted on the tip of the top fin. The lower two fins serve as landing gear.
Though Clutches are sometimes referred to as "tri-fighters", they are not to be confused with the earlier droid Tri-Fighters used by the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the later years of the Clone Wars.
I do have an issue with the rendition used here for the "tri" fighter "clutch". the "tines" (not solar panels) pointed backwards with the viewport being the formost point on the ship "it looked like the ball cockpit was being grasped with three fingers from behind" hence "clutch"
