In one incarnation or another, the ComTac implant has been used by the Shau'ghunate Guard and Clan forces for nearly five hundred years. The ComTac's most common feature, for which it is known, is a neural interface which allows for direct mental interaction with computer systems.

Until the Uul'ba-Rai Jihad, almost all Guard and Clan personnel had the implant. Currently, only humanoid, Uul'ba-Rai and Joyite Shau'ghunate Guard forces, including Household Guard, continue to be fitted with ComTac implants. However, in the mainstream Armed Forces, there are many veterans who also have the implant, including a high proportion of command staff. Work continues on ComTac versions that will function properly for Raka Kiri and Bahuji Guardsmen and women.

The implant is also available to Commander/Lt. Colonel rank or higher in the mainstream JEAF. However, it is not required.

Some ComTac implants, reverse-engineered or surgically removed, have found their way to third parties such as Skavi al'Kon. The Jade Worlds' accepting attitude towards fashionable implants has frequently led to the development of civilian competitors. Many citizens of the Jade Empire have implants of comparable function.

Functions[]

Many varieties of ComTac implants exist, assorted by year, purpose, and rank. Some common features include:

  • Information access
  • Subvocal and vocal communications
  • Direct shipboard systems access
  • Systems diagnosic capability
  • Command override capability
  • Four-dimensional sonic interpretation: when installed and activated, this feature creates a mental 'map' of one's surroundings
  • Sensory information recording
  • Combat Arms Suit systems interface

The ComTac can also function as a base for more extensive cyborg implants. For example, Commander Brembla Kol-Rekali's implants include a ComTac module. Some varieties include a comm puncher, designed to transmit over significantly longer distances or through battle static. The pilot and sensor intercept officer of a Dactyl Starfighter must be well-experienced in the use of the ComTac, as the ComTac and the Dactyl's technology allow a very deep level of connection between crew and vessel.
