The Defender-class Star Destroyer, also known as the Nebula-class Star Destroyer, is the largest, most powerful warship design in the New Republic's New Class modernization program. Although it is only 1,040 meters long (65% of the length of an Imperial-class Star Destroyer), the Defender is considered a match for an Imperial-class Star Destroyer Mark II. It is designed to be able to defeat any one enemy Star Destroyer, two heavy cruisers (such as Dreadnaughts or Vindicators), or an entire line of smaller Imperial support ships.
The armament of the Defender-class Star Destroyer consists of 40 heavy turbolaser cannons, 40 turbolaser cannons, 20 ion cannons, 8 tractor beam projectors, and 8 assault concussion missile tubes, each equipped with 30 missiles.
It should be noted that, despite the touting of far superior firepower over the Republic-class, the two have nearly similar armaments: the difference is eight concussion missile launchers for the Defender, and two additional tractor beams for the Republic. What makes the largest difference between these two ships is the vastly upgraded technology that gives the Defender superior defensive capabilities.
The ships can carry up to sixty starfighters and shuttles, normally including one wing of three fighter squadrons, plus support ships. Nebula-class Star Destroyers are equipped with a class 1 hyperdrive, and they carry 1,600 troops and enough consumables for five to six months, depending on configuration.
Few have seen actual combat as these craft have been deployed in limited numbers due to the losses the New Republic suffered from Damascus’ Empire and the Xen'Chi. It is rumored that the first Defender-class commissioned - the Obi Wan - is commanded by a Wookiee, Captain Whyrryk, and assigned to the Red Dagger Fleet. The notorious fleet has been noticeably absent from the galactic eye after suffering devastating defeats at Coruscant, and then taking heavy losses during the Battle of Corellia.
