The Defender Star Fighter, also known as the New Republic Defender is a starfighter designed and produced by the Republic Engineering Corporation, specifically for the New Republic.
At 6 meters in length, the Defender is crewed by a single pilot. Armed with 3 fire-linked laser cannons, this easy to pilot fighter maintains its role as a space superiority fighter. Its extendable S-foil maneuvering struts can retract into the spaceframe for non-combat situations; but once an enemy has been engaged, the struts swing down and forward to give the Defender better positioning for maneuvering jet bursts.
While sudden maneuvers in an atmosphere actually risk tearing off the struts, in space the Defender can literally spin around 180 degrees in mid-flight by firing one maneuvering jet forward and one backward.
