The Kuat Drive Yards EF76 Nebulon-B Escort Frigate, more commonly known as the Nebulon-B Frigate, is a strangely-shaped ship that has a long, thin hull with its main decks hanging off the front end and the engines hanging off the rear. It measures 300 meters in length. They are fairly slow, unwieldy ships (for their size), and are designed to carry a number of starfighters as protection. They have a normal crew of 916, and are built for not quite a fifth the cost of an Imperial-class Star Destroyer.
The EF76 was introduced some months after the Clone Wars, long before the formal establishment of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. The Nebulon-B became a convoy workhorse for the Empire, defending Imperial convoys against raids by Rebel starfighters. The Imperial Navy was loath to relegate its expensive Imperial Star Destroyers to escort duty, while the Corellian Corvette was considered too weak and carried few if any TIE Fighters.
The EF76 has ended up being used extensively by both sides in the Galactic Civil War. The frigate is known and respected for its efficiency against fighters and bombers, and its anti-fighter assignment in Imperial convoys had an immediate impact, causing the Rebels to reconsider their hyperspace raids after suffering irreplaceable losses in fighters and pilots. They are also often used to support larger capital ships, such as Imperial-class Star Destroyers and Mon Calamari Star Cruisers.
Although the Nebulon-B is a design showing its age and is slowly being replaced by larger governments with its stronger successor, or the newer Corona-class Frigates, it is still quite numerous. The Nebulon-B can also be found with many smaller governments and organizations.
