The star cluster is located 'below' the plane of the galaxy, specifically under the Jade Empire. It is outside the hyperspace barrier that surrounds the galaxy. In 17 ABY, Jade Empire physicists plotted the interaction between the barrier and the black hole/white fountain pair that is central to the Jade sector. They found a temporary hyperspace tunnel that allowed the JEAF starship Kaloskagathia to reach the cluster. The window would open again six weeks later.
Stellar Cartography[]
The cluster contains hundreds of stars of all kinds, most of them giants, supergiants or dead stars. There are 63 stars of the general type that might have planets.
Spatiotemporal Anomaly[]
The entire cluster is located within a space-time anomaly. Time passes much more quickly within the cluster than in the galaxy, by a factor of approximately 71. From the Kaloskagathia's perspective, eight years passed while waiting for the window to open.
Behind the Scenes[]
The cluster was inspired by an episode of Star Trek: Voyager, where a planet experienced time at a much greater rate than the outside universe. While wrestling with the physics of perspective, I decided it would be much easier to have a whole star cluster affected.
Temporal distortions generally don't happen in Star Wars, but there is canon precedent.
