The Hand of Mathsin (a name given it by an ancient primitive species) is a bizarre Sith Magic ability conferred by a specially enchanted - and highly rare - amulet or location. After amputating his or her own hand, the user could keep it alive and direct its action as if it were still attached to the arm.
Whether the hand could be reattached was an open question among scholars of a certain era.
By the current era, this technique had gone unencountered for thousands of years. However, an amulet in the care of Velok was believed to grant this power; he was uninterested in it and would later turn it over to one of his associates. Considering a similar effect could be achieved through Force Choke, the Hand of Mathsin was essentially useless.
