- "Depending on who you talk to, I'm either a child of destiny or a portent of doom."
- — Maia Nevri
Maia Nevri is the daughter of Sona Nevri and Kail. A child of two Near-Human species with distinctive DNA, Maia has inherited the full abilities of both. Most notably, by some quirk of genetics, she somehow received the natural telepathic abilities of the Lin while still retaining a mouth, which was a combination thought to be impossible since it has never happened before in any other instance of Lin crossbreeding with another species.
This has caused a slight schism within the Linshi Monks, the first in their history. While most Lin are a bit put off by Maia retaining a mouth, there is a much more extreme faction that sees it as blasphemous to the entire religion. In their view, the ancient Lin underwent a program to remove their mouths as a sign of their devotion to their god, Lin’La’Se, who then boosted their telepathic abilities as a reward. To have a Lin-based monk with a mouth and strong telepathic abilities would therefore be a sin and something that should be removed from their society.
For her part, Maia tries not to think about what kind of effect her birth has had on some monks. At most she typically covers her mouth up with a scarf while inside Lin'La'Se territory to help put other Lin at ease. It's an interesting juxtaposition since that's what most Lin do outside of their territory to better blend in with galactic society.
As if disrupting Linshi society wasn't enough, Maia is also destined to one day inherit the sword of Haldrin Mirmek from her mother - a very powerful weapon that is held sacred by the Silserian people. For her part, Maia tries to take it all in stride. She understands the responsibility that is her birthright and does her best to mitigate the stress of it all with a sardonic attitude.
