Biography[]

Early Life[]

"Mama, a mockingbird"
— Rowan Chapman, age 3

Rowan was born in Charleston, South Carolina to Garrett and Emily Chapman (née Rowan). Her father, a former Division 1 Wrestler at the University of Georgia, became a facility manager at a research facility in Charleston, South Carolina. This came after he served in the U.S. Army, reaching the rank of Sergeant First Class. There, he met her mother, Dr. Emily Chapman, a biology researcher. Rowan came shortly after, given Emily's maiden last name and a middle name after Amelia Earhart. From a young age, Rowan was a curious child and her parents worked hard to encourage that. She was raised as a bit of a tomboy, learning a lot from her father. Her mother stressed her education, and pushed Rowan to get good grades in school. When Rowan was four, her younger brother, Arthur, was born.

By the time she was in high school, Rowan was well known as a student athlete, excelling at wrestling with her father's tutelage. She was also doing pretty well in school, and her mother started to talk to her about college scholarships. Rowan wasn't sure what she wanted to do but she was fascinated by the idea of flight. One of the ways she and her mother bonded was through ornithology. Her closest friend growing up was Nora.

Rowan ended up getting a wrestling scholarship to Iowa, to study biology. She acquitted herself well in women's wrestling and her studies. She graduated, at an accelerated pace, finishing the bachelor's degree in two years. Rowan applied to Clemson for her master's degree in biochemical engineering. During this time, she was approached by a recruiter from the CIA, to see if she was interested in joining as an analyst.

While Rowan wasn't immediately keen, she spoke with her parents who advised her to pursue the opportunity. She completed her degree and went to the Farm for training. When she got there, she made a few friends, but she made many more good impressions. Her wrestling experience indicated that maybe field work was where she would excel more. As a result, her training was shifted and she learned the ropes of being a field agent. She was also tossed through the ringer when it came to her combat training.

Rowan had grown up learning how to shoot from her father, but she had to get better and quickly. Additionally, she also got expanded martial arts training. Rowan had learned Spanish in school, but now she also was taught French and Russian, though later Alina Pirogova would be critical of her Russian pronunciation.

Rowan celebrated her twenty-first birthday well after graduating from the Farm.

Rowan Chapman, Agent of the CIA[]

After completing her training, Rowan knew she would face her final test: her red test. A red test consisted of a wet work op that could and more than likely would, involve murder. Apprehensive, as she wasn't sure if she actually could kill, Rowan still accepted the mission when given to her.

A Sapphire Development researcher had gone rogue, stealing a serum and its data. Her mission was to recover the stolen items and eliminate the researcher, located in Madripoor. Torn with killing for the first time, she spoke with some of her friends and her mother, talking around the issue. Her best conversation however was with Sakuraba, one of the CIA combatives instructors. Rowan's primary concern was taking a life would start her down the path to being an unsuitable partner with someone, changing her permanently. After being reassured by Sakuraba her future was hers to control, Rowan went to Madripoor.

She arrived a few days before the planned auction. She went to the casino to see if any other players had arrived. While playing poker, she met Alexander Garcia and noticed he was consistently losing to one particular player. Once she realized the pattern and amount, she followed suit. During the game, they were joined by a mysterious woman who also lost roughly the same amount to the same player.

She accepted Alex's invitation to a nightclub after. There, when she thought they would be alone and she could try to uncover who he was and get information on the auction, they were joined by the woman from the poker game, Alina Piragova. While Rowan and Alex were dancing, he told her Alina's status as a Black Widow. During the night of dancing, Rowan met some of the others present, including Kenzie Sanders, Reid Richards, and Nolan Holloway. She chatted with Kenzie about their mutual friend, Nora, a fashion designer.

The next day, Rowan received a box from a courier. Inside, she received access to the serum auction. She went to do recon on the area where the auction would be and during that time ran into Alex Garcia again. When she came up with shopping as an excuse as to why she was in the area, Garcia invited himself to join her and they visited a high-end luxury jewelry boutique together.

Rowan tried on various pieces of jewelry to appease Garcia, including a Bulgari necklace that he insisted on wanting to purchase for her. She refused to accept the necklace. Additionally, Garcia made his intentions clearly known, flirting with her. Rowan, as Madelyn Hubert, wanted to give in, but Rowan, as Rowan, knew it was wrong, considering her relationship with Hugh Stanford. Rowan did her best to resist the attention, finally extricating herself from the situation. She went back to her hotel, intending to spend more time in the casino.

This served multiple purposes. She had found out she could keep whatever she earned in the casino and she wanted to see if she could learn more about the woman that she, Alina and Alex had all intentionally lost money to so they could buy access to the auction.

  • Skilled Dancer: Rowan is an accomplished dancer of different forms. Part of this skill comes from her own interest in various forms of dance while another part is from her training by the CIA. • Expert Marksman: Rowan is skilled with throwing weapons and sharpshooting. When in the field, Rowan utilizes two Sig Sauer P226 pistols, chambered in .357Sig. While they are chambered for regular rounds, their primary fire option is a non-lethal electric current that will incapacitate an unarmored opponent. This allows Rowan the versatility to move silently as when firing these types of shots, there is little to no sound.

Limitations[]

Mockingbird is susceptible to all human vulnerabilities.

Personality[]

"Waller was serious, focused and driven. Rowan was those things as well. But where Waller could clearly get melodramatic with his obligations, Rowan’s joie de vivre was a good counterbalance. Meanwhile, ever since she had known Rowan, Alina had noted there had been some kind of dark cloud hanging over the woman’s head."
