Nyra Zess was a near-human Force-sensitive girl of unknown origin who was found by Jaylin Kumar in 17 ABY on a world controlled by Kroda the Hutt. The smuggler saved her from the planet and her captors and took her to Taylon, whereupon she was given apprenticeship to Reina Krailles. Reina was hesitant, at first, to accept the young girl as her apprentice, given the emotional trauma she had just gone through with the Battle of Taylon, but reluctantly agreed, and soon found herself developing a bond with Nyra.
The two grew fond of each other, as a mother and daughter relationship would, and Reina took to unofficially adopting her as her own child, vowing to protect her at all costs. Despite the growing trust and relationship between the two, Nyra was very quiet about her past and never spoke of who, or what, she was and where she came from. This often frustrated Reina, to a degree, but respected her right to privacy and seldom brought it up as a topic of conversation.
Reina found that Nyra was a gifted young girl in the Force, and foresaw a bright future for her.
