Phelan Niall was born on Balmorra to a mediocre-income family. He grew up with little ambition, until it was time for the draft into service for the Galactic Empire. He reluctantly joined, and entered service through the academy where his potential was fully realized as a commanding officer in the army. From there, he graduated the academy and proceeded directly to field work, leading a platoon of soldiers on various combat missions.
His advancement in rank was only average, but his skills well noteworthy. By roughly 3 ABY, Phelan achieved the rank of general, and was assigned to Bandomeer for a time. He eventually went on his own, rather than succumbing to any single Imperial warlord's desires, and was sought by Keldon Tyfus for employment into the Shadow Imperium. After Phelan was told what to expect, he agreed to the job offer. Nearly his entire unit transfered with him, and those that did not were executed on basis of treason.
Phelan became the executive officer in the Shadow Imperium's Armed Forces, in the position of Grand General. He was loyal to the Imperium's cause, and would die to keep Tyfus's dream alive. He continued to serve as this position through the Sith Revolution, and upon swearing loyalty to Darth Trayus, retained the same position still.
