History[]

Formally Camp Long, and Fort Sullivan before that, the area on Seavey Island that the Portsmouth Naval Prison occupies has been in use since approximately 1775 first as a defensive outpost during the British-American War in the early 1800s and against attacks from the Confederate Navy in the 1860's. The site was dismantled and would not be used again until the Spanish-American War, when it was rebuilt to be used as a stockade and renamed Camp Long. Camp Long was dismantled in 1901 though the site would once again go under construction between 1905-1908 when the US Navy chose to build a naval prison there. The Porsmouth Naval Prison, as it would be named, would remain in service as the "Alcatraz of the East" until 1974 when it was rendered obsolete by the opening of the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Portsmouth Naval Prison was added to the National Register of Historical Places on January 26, 1970. [1]

Weapon X[]

After heavy backroom lobbying by the Weapon X program, the government awarded Weapon X with the closed down and abandoned Porsmouth Naval Prison and several other surrounding structures. Immediately after taken possession the facilities were extensively renovated and redesigned. What was an outdated brig soon became a state of the art Weapon X research facility. Capable of securely holding hundreds of mutants and other test subjects and stuffed full of all the latest advancements in medical and research technology Weapon X's Institute for the Betterment of Mankind, or IBM for short, was created. Director X personally selected Dr. Hans Gruber to be the facilities Administrator and project leader.

Description[]

Officially, the US Government announced that the construction being done on the prison was federally sanctioned. The statement released by the government was that the facility was being repurposed to become a prison and rehabilitation facility for criminals of the super human and mutant variety.

Truthfully, the facility serves a much, much more sinister purpose. Weapon X scientists and doctors assigned to the prison are selected for their specialized skills and unscrupulousness. The facility is on the leading edge of Mutant and Human DNA modification research and development. Pre-screened human subjects and discovered Mutants and Superhuman subjects are rounded up, most against their will, and transported to the facility where they are imprisoned and absorbed into the IBM project.
