Built in and on 35 kilometers of nickel-iron asteroid, the space city Shang Ra'la houses the ruling family of the Jade Empire: Empress Halla Terrablade and Emperor Braily Terrablade.

Skyscrapers reach up kilometers from the asteroid's upper surface, but they are only part of the massive city that reaches into the planetoid's core. A mixture of architecture from planets of Sandia and the Jade Worlds, the city houses three quarters of a million people, and encompasses residencies and embassies for notables of every description. Although not in any circumstances a warship, for the sake of the royal family's security it is protected by a light planetary shield generator and the weaponry of an Imperial Mark II. Huge docking bays can accommodate small capital ships.

A Patriot training facility is located somewhere in the city.

History[]

The space city was constructed in orbit around an obscure gas giant in the Kingdom of Halcyon in the Unknown Regions, guarded by a massive Sandian fleet including a large Templar contingent, as well as the Guard's Second Sector Fleet. Much of the engineering insight came from the Jade Worlds' history of constructing huge, ecologically balanced space settlements, often home to millions.

The Shang was crucial to the unification of the Jade Empire, and to any number of diplomatic and humanitarian concerns afterwards. In one notable incident, the space city was crammed with refugees to facilitate the evacuation of the planet Kelsal.

The Shang is frequently on the move between member worlds. Its 'home port' is a high orbit over Joy.
