The Tector-class Star Destroyer has been in service to the Galactic Empire since its very beginning. In the years following the rise of the Empire, the Tector-class and its sister-design supplanted the less robust Venator-class, leading to it being phased out of frontline duty.
It is essentially a version of the contemporary Imperial-class, with ventral hangars absent. Instead of ventral hangar bays, the design opts for an increase in armor that covers the areas normally used as main hangar openings, as well as the reactor core. This makes the design more efficient in ship-to-ship combat, as it has less access to internal weak-spots. However, it limits its usefulness in other roles. Being without hangars, it requires dedicated carriers to provide any starfighter support.
While effective in its designated roles, the Tector's lack of versatility meant that it was never produced in the same kind of numbers as the Imperial-class. Although not as numerous, many of these sturdy ships continue to serve in Imperial fleets decades after their conception.
