The Venom-class Scout Fighter, a variant of the ARC-170, was produced by Killian Shipyards, producing the frame under license.

Killian Shipyards made extensive upgrades to the engines, weaponry, and sensor suite, exchanged the power plant for a high-efficiency anti-matter power plant, installed a proprietary BioComp, and modified the astromech droid slot to fit a Confederate TX-3 astromech droid. This change prevented use of R-series astromech droids, as the TX-3 was radically different from R-series droids. The result was a powerful fighter optimised for the reconnaissance mission.

The Venom-class was often sent on dangerous scout missions and raids deep in enemy territory. To allow the Venom to perform these missions, the fighter was equipped with a Class 1 hyperdrive, and its nose was filled with powerful sensors, scanners, and jammers. The Venom also possessed an S-foil system. These helped to radiate heat, which aided the fighter's shielding, and provided additional stability during atmospheric flight.

These ships carried enough consumables for five days of operation. However, all these supplies and additional equipment had a price, and the Venom - while faster than its parent - was still quite slow. Durable armor and shielding, as well as two tail guns, helped the Venom to survive when surrounded by swarms of smaller, faster enemy fighters.

The Venom possessed powerful weaponry. It carried 8 proton torpedoes, and its wingtip-mounted medium laser cannons were unusually large for a starfighter.

The Venom was crewed by three: a pilot, a co-pilot who operated the wingtip-mounted lasers, and a tail gunner who operated the rear-mounted cannons. The fighter also carried an astromech droid to perform onboard repairs and navigation.
