- "Victory or death. No exceptions."
- — Zel Merrik
Not much is known about Zel Merrik outside of his service record in the Stormtrooper Corps. He was born on the world of Milvayne the same year that Emperor Palpatine dissolved the Republic. With Milvayne considered to be a fortress world and home to an Ubiqtorate base, Merrick grew up immersed in Imperial culture and firmly believing in the cause of the New Order. He left for Cardia as soon as he was old enough to join the army and proved to be an exceptional soldier.
He quickly developed a fierce reputation on the battlefield, not just as a fighter but also as a tactician; willing to face any odds to achieve his objective and more often than not succeeding at it through a mixture of ruthless strategy and no-holds-barred combat. This brought him to the attention of Teron Helstone who had Merrik transferred to his 11th Battle Group where Merrik continued to receive accolades for his victories on the battlefield.
Perhaps inevitably, Merrik’s accomplishments convinced Helstone to transfer Merrik into Hellion Company; considered to be the most elite unit within the 11th. It was among the Hellions that Merrik achieved true infamy among his enemies and allies alike. Due to the brutal nature of the Hellions, becoming commander of the company was often considered a short-term assignment since very few lasted long in command before being killed in battle. Merrik ended up assuming command of the Hellions after the previous commander was killed during a mission on Bassadro in 9 ABY and has held that title ever since.
Merrik currently holds the distinction of being the longest surviving commander of the Hellions in the unit’s history. This is even more impressive given the fact that he still prefers to lead the Hellions from the battlefield, feeling that no true leader would subject his troops to anything he wouldn’t do himself.
